When is the best time to plant a tree, and how should it be planted?

The best times to plant most trees are spring or early autumn, when temperatures are cooler and there is usually more rainfall. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the roots, place the tree upright, fill with soil, gently firm the soil around the roots, and water thoroughly.
